A 1991 comparative study (Mothers of boys with gender identity disorder: a comparison) revealed that mothers of boys w gender identity disorder (GDI) had more symptoms of depression and more often met the criteria for Borderline Personality Disorder than mothers of normal boys. [Link]

Page 311 of the study says they foused on mothers who had disorders clinically observed previously. Meaning they picked mothers who were already diagnosed with a mental disorders. You can't select people with already known mental disorders and attribute this as the cause. [Link]
