These are crude divorce rates, calculated by taking the # of divorces for every 1,000 people, per year. This includes unmarried people and children, unlike dividing divorces/marriages. Also, countries like Portugal have the lowest # of marriages out of the listed countries. [Link]

The data shown here represents "divorce ratios", not "divorce rates". A divorce rate refers to the number of divorces per 1,000 people per year. A divorce ratio is the proportion of marriages to divorces per 1,000 people per year. [Link]
