The UK does not have official quotas for asylum seekers. The claim that asylum seekers arriving by boat across the Channel take the place of applicants from refugee camps is misleading. Every claimant is assessed on merit regardless of how they arrive. [Link]

Those arriving by boat are not illegal. It is legal to enter a country to claim asylum [Link] The UK is taking very few refugees from camps - only 1391 in 2022 under the UN resettlement scheme [Link]

It is not possible to make an asylum claim until you have entered the UK. There are no recognised routes from these camps to the UK. It is therefore misleading to suggest that asylum seekers in the UK can have any effect on people in refugee camps outside of the country. [Link] [Link]
