While notes on Wikipedia and Time *suggests* that Yasuke was paid a stipend (unconfirmed), there are no proofs that suggests Yasuke wasn't infact a slave. Also, the Japanese empire at the time traded humans and it is very possible that Yasuke was a slave turned handyman. [Link]

It is unclear if Yasuke was a samurai, sources call him a 小姓 (koshō ), a page or sword bearer/retainer. It is also unclear if he was ever a slave. This statue is an art piece made by Nicola Roos in 2017, it was created out of recycled rubber tyre tubing. [Link] [Link] [Link]
