Standing in the background is the Chinese military. It is not the uniform of the Japanese army. Note the difference between the uniforms of the Chinese and Japanese armies in 1937. [Link]

The photo was verified as authentic when it was rediscovered in 2008. Multiple experts on Japanese uniforms and military history agree that the photo depicts Japanese soldiers burying Chinese prisoners alive in Nanjing. [Link]

NNN. I was not able to find support for claim that the soldiers in the background are Chinese. The "japanknowledge" link that describes japanese uniforms to my eye matches what we see in the photo, and there was no chinese uniform provided for comparison.

NNN Yes the photo is a composite but only to enlarge the photo. No part of the burying of Chinese people alive was altered only the more of the background was filled in with other angles of the event. [Link]
