The Constitution says, among other things, that an election will be held any time the government loses a non-confidence vote, with a maximum term length of five years, barring war or a similar emergency. In Canada an election may be called anytime the PM asks the Governor General to dissolve Parliament. The maximum length of a federal mandate is 5 years.
