Under the terms of the National Rail Conditions of Carriage, a ticket issued in a digital format is still valid, and Merseyrail as a signatory to the Conditions are not permitted to reject a valid digital ticket. [Link]

Merseyrail’s Metro Smart Card (a physical card) allows you to buy online tickets to load on to the card, so technically is digital, then anyone checking onboard can scan the physical card using NFC chip readers. This message is certainly unclear. [Link]

NNN - a ticket issued by Trainline is not automatically a "digital ticket". It clearly states it is a paper ticket, which must be printed/collected before travel.

E-Tickets, while not meant to be issued on journeys that include Merseyrail travel, are accepted on their network. This post refers to tickets have to be collected from a ticket machine or ticket office, which are not valid if not collected. [Link]

You are told multiple times when purchasing tickets on Trainline or any other online retailer for use on Merseyrail that you MUST get the ticket printed before travelling, this community note is misleading and will result in people being given penalte fares. [Link]

NNN NRCC conditions state Some Tickets held as an electronic record on a smartcard / lec device / transmitted for you to show or PRINT out yourself. In such cases you will be advised of (and must comply with) the specific conditions applying to Tickets held in those formats.

Merseyrail have their own conditions of carriage and not subject to those of National Rail, this has been the case for around 10 years: [Link] While you can buy Merseyrail tickets on Trainline, these are not eTickets so therefore *DO* need to be printed off as stated above.

Merseyrail sells digital "Day Saver" tickets on its website. [Link] "You can now buy an All Area Adult and 18 and under Day Saver online. Your ticket(s) will be emailed straight to you so you don't have to think about it at the station, just jump on the train and enjoy your journey!"

Most tickets for travel on Merseyrail can only be purchased as paper tickets. These must be collected prior to travel. Some tickets are valid for travel across Merseyrail but available as E-Tickets. These, as per the NRCoT (§4.2), do not need to be printed before travel. [Link]
