CNs falsely cite overall unemployment rates to counter the OP's factual reference to CMIE's 45.4% YOUTH unemployment rate. CMIE's YOUTH (age: 15-24) labour statistics show 45.4% unemployment in 2022-23: [Link] CMIE also cited 44.49% (20-24 yrs) & 14.33% (25-29 yrs) in OND2023: [Link]

Mr. Basu's tweet talks about "youth unemployment" while the community notes talk about general unemployment. Mr. Basu's data is correct [Link] > According to the CMIE, for instance, the youth unemployment rate stood at as high as 45.4%.

OP is making a logical fallacy. Unemployment rate = % of people WANTING a job who don't have one. Ex: Say 40% of citizens DON'T want a job (studying, retired etc) & 60% WANT a job. Now say 50% of all citizens are employed (& 40% don't want a job) Umempl rate = 10/60 = 16.6% [Link]

[Link] Youth is calculated using people from the 14+ age bracket. Most of these people are still in high school/ higher secondary/ college. India has a very high proportion of college / higher degree holders to high schoolers. The CMIE data makes sense at the third age bracket.

This statement is wrong according to the report he states it is from. 45% of the age group 20-24 is unemployed is a logical fallacy. Most in this age group are studying, some are self employed and etc. Unemployment rate in India declined to 7.6 per cent in March 2024. [Link]
