They were in the belly of a beast, and even if they did not know it, it's shown like a place where there's some atmosphere on it, with gasses and animals. But not a breathable one, hence, the masks. [Link]

It doesn't matter if it's inside a creature or not, the creature's mouth is open, and they didn't know it wasn't a cave but still went out there with that equipment. It establishes in this universe that you don't need a pressurized suit generally. NNN

Even if they were inside a space worm, the worm had its mouth open and they also didn’t know it was a worm, so they thought they were going onto an asteroid, and so they believed this was enough equipment, so either han is an idiot or this is good enoigh for an astroid
