You have always needed a passport or national identity document to travel in the EU. It is not factually correct to say one could travel passport free. [Link]

While technically correct that he still needed a passport to travel before the UK left the EU his real point is that he can no longer live and work anywhere he likes within it at any time. He's limited to only 3 months a year. [Link]

NNN. Idle clearly meant “visa” when he said “passport” and while that does make him technically wrong, it doesn’t substantively change his objection or mislead the reader about the effects of Brexit. It’s pedantic, and not really what community notes are meant to correct.

It's not even technically correct to say you always needed a passport to travel to the EU. You could use a document, such as a photo driving licence, to prove EU citizenship and thus travel to the EU. [Link] [Link]

It is also true that, previous to Brexit, that once in Europe, travel between countries was permitted without passport. [Link]

NNN There is nothing factually wrong with this post, and it isn't missing any important context. 8 years ago, it WAS possible to travel to and from mainland Europe to the UK and back using only a photo ID, which is substantially different from a passport requirement.
