The UK has a “First Past the Post” system where voters vote per constituency. Percentage of voters nationally voting for a party is not used in this system and therefore extrapolating party popularities from the GE results is not possible. [Link]

In 2011 a UK-wide referendum was held to ask if the voting system should be changed from first past the post to an alternative vote system. The UK voted to keep the current system with a result of 67.9% saying no to change [Link]
