The medal table is actually determined by the number of gold medals not the total medals making the US 2nd below China (Correct as of writing) [Link]

NNN - The medal count table shown is ordered by total number of medals which is a valid order. The note indicates the medal table *has* to be ordered by number of gold medals yet provides a link that in fact allows ordering the table both by gold medals and total medals.

NNN. United States' media usually address the Olympics' Medal Table as per medal count, and not the olympic order. They are topping under this criterion the table, although the Olympic table states that China is first because of most golds. [Link] [Link]

NNN. Although the CN is correct about how the "medal table" is determined, the original post clearly states "medal count" and is therefore counting all medals instead of just gold medals. They also don't claim that this is an offical ranking of any kind. Simply a medal count.

The medal count is consistently changing and adding a CN to it would make it and the CN out of date and irrelevant.
