While Walz did earn a promotion, he never completed the additional coursework needed to officially become a Command Sargent Major. Because of this, the Army rejected Walz's retirement paperwork and forced him to resubmit as a master sergeant, an E-8 ranked position. [Link]

Factually the rank achieved is incorrect and the post would be better if that error were corrected. [Link]

NNN. Argue about semantics in the comments. "Walz attained the rank of command sergeant major and served in that role but retired as a master sergeant in 2005 for benefit purposes due to not completing additional coursework" - per a US Army PR officer in the article. [Link]

Tim Walz retired as a Master Sergeant (E-8) in 2005, not as an E-9 Cmd. Sgt Major. [Link]

[Link] [Link] The post is extremely misleading and leaves out JD Vance's total awards and does not take into account that National Guard years are not the equivalent of Active Duty service years.

The list of awards for Vance is incomplete. A notable omission is the N&MC Achievement Medal. Also, his official MOS was Combat Correspondent. [Link]

He retired as a master sergeant, not at the higher rank of command sergeant major. Walz served at the higher rank but left before completing all the extra training necessary for the rank. [Link]

The note about retiring as a E-8 vs E-9 isn’t needed for the OP as the graphic Is factually correct. Mil retirements and specifically guard promotion/retirements have admin nuances that don’t change character of service. However Vance’ info is misleading as it is missing awards.

For those trying to over state his military career as a Combat Correspondent, yes that was his MOS, but he was attached to a Public Relations Dept & spent his entire 6 month Iraq tour in an air conditioned office...in a non-combative role. Thanks for your service JD. [Link]
