It appears Elon's interpretation is the accepted one. [Link] [Link] [Link]

Sources in proposed note say 'slave' is derived from 'slav., Elon claims 'slav' referred to people taken as slaves. These are not the same thing. Proposed note is incorrect.

According to the OED, the Slav and slave had similar original spellings but different origins and were not synonymous in English. That is, slave did not derive from Slav. [Link] [Link]

NNN and stop calling him "Ellon". It's not your friend, even if you wanted to.

Elon is giving the origin of the word “slave” - not the word “slav”. He is saying that the English word for “slave” comes from the word “slav” not the reverse - as this poster implies. Thus, Elon is correct and not “talking from his ass”. [Link]

The ethomolgy is more complex than Musk tries to make it. Probably true that for arabic slave-traders. BUT, white people in Europe (Greek, Italian) also used that term, probably much earlier and skin colour didn't play a role. [Link] [Link] Note: Musk grew in Apartheid RSA

The word "slave" is derived from the word "Slav," as the Slavic people were commonly slaves. However, the origin of the word is largely moot. Musk is using an etymological fallacy here, insinuating that the race of the slaves matters to contemporary use. It does not. [Link]
