While Foo Fighters may not have given direct permission, the song in question is licensed by BMI, who sells blanket licenses to political campaigns. An artist must notify BMI of an objection, who then notifies the political campaign it is no longer included in their license. [Link] [Link]

NNN, go argue semantics in the comments. This is clearly Foo Fighters stating a personal refusal to grant permission, not a legal debate over who has that power.

NNN; while the intricacies of music licensing may come into play eventually, they have no bearing on this post: the Foo Fighters DID NOT give permission for the Trump campaign to use their song "My Hero". They do not claim illegal usage (in which case the note WOULD be relevant).

While the intricacies of rescinding permission for music licensing may come into play eventually, they have no bearing on this post: A BMI license IS permission. [Link]

The Trump campaign did purchase the license to use the song. “ The Independent has seen documents appearing to confirm that the campaign had indeed licensed the song from BMI’s Songview service. “We have a license to play the song,” a campaign spokesperson said.” [Link]

the question is “did the Foo Fighters allow the use of ‘My Hero’” NOT “did BMI allow the use of ‘My Hero’” or “was ‘My Hero’ used legally”. It’s a question of how the band FEELS about the song being used. Therefore the proposed Community Notes are irrelevant.

The Foo Fighters are clearly saying that the use of this song does not signify their endorsement of Trump. They have not accused the Trump campaign of illegal use, but have stated that they did not personally give permission, nor do they wish to be associated with the campaign.

NNN. The foofighters did not give permission. “Campaign organizers pay an annual fee to obtain a blanket license from performance rights organizations to play or perform any work”. The song was played and they will receive royalties regardless. [Link] [Link] [Link]

Note not needed. Whether the Trump campaign bought the rights from a music publisher to use their song or not, Foo Fighters are explicitly saying that they as a band do not condone it's use by the Trump campaign.
