Violet, arguably a purple hue, is present on the visible spectrum (monochromatic) and, therefore, does ‘exist’. Magenta, a shade of purple, however, is the mixture of red and blue light and is not on the visible spectrum making it an ‘extra-spectral colour’. [Link] [Link] [Link] [Link]

"Does not exist" references that the cognitive*experience* of color is brain interpolation of the electromagnetic signal. You can say a wavelength frequency is real. But it would be experienced fundamentally different in altered physiology. Color is optical illusion experience.

Often in technical color theory, "purple" means a mix of red and blue. Other colors typically represent single wavelengths of light, but in this context purple does not. Saying it "doesn't exist" is somewhat hyperbolic, but it is not the same as other colors. [Link]
