“Generates 3 times more energy than it consumes” The Department of Energy Security and Net Zero appears to be unfamiliar with the laws of thermodynamics. [Link] They have completely misunderstood the meaning of “three times more efficient”. NEEDS_MORE_RATINGS(32-0-6) Author

Since energy can neither be created nor destroyed, the claim that heat pumps generate 3 times more energy than they consume is one which contravenes the laws of physics. [Link] NEEDS_MORE_RATINGS(46-0-7) Author

NNN: Heat pumps do not break the laws of thermodynamics, even though they generate more energy than is put into the heat pump via electricity. Heat pumps use extant thermal energy in the surroundings, and then use electricity to re-distribute it in an efficient manner. [Link][Link] NEEDS_MORE_RATINGS(6-0-22) Author

Firstly, it is more accurate to say a heat pump captures three times more heat energy than the electrical energy used. Secondly, a modern boiler will have 90% efficiency, so the heat pump would be 3.0 / 0.9 = 3.3 more efficient, not 3.0 as stated. [Link] NEEDS_MORE_RATINGS(16-0-8) Author

Heat pumps do not generate heat energy, they capture it from the environment. They might capture 3x more heat energy than elec energy they consume but it can be low temp. Gas boilers directly generate heat energy at 90%+ efficiency and high temps. Hence a false comparison [Link] NEEDS_MORE_RATINGS(35-2-5) Author

Heat pumps are amazing inventions, however they have one flaw - by taking heat from the surrounding area they become more efficient as the temp rises, On extremely cold days they work significantly less well. On coldest days you will need alternative heat sources. [Link] NEEDS_MORE_RATINGS(13-0-3) Author
