These are contrails, or condensation trails, which are clouds produced by the exhaust of an airplane’s engine. One explanation for why they may seem different than in the past is that older jets were often leaving exhaust smoke in the sky, not contrails. [Link] [Link]

Airlines have tamped down on carbon emissions by flying planes at higher altitudes. In doing so, the higher-flying aircraft are creating more contrails that last longer. Airplanes create the lines of water vapor when they fly through cold high altitude humidity zones. [Link]
