This quote is taken out of context. The entire quote is a summation that preserving the Union was his goal, he'd also already drafted the Emancipation Proclamation prior to this. [Link] [Link]

The Lincoln quote is cut off. It continues: "and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it[...]". He was explaining that his priority was to "save the Union". He had secretly decided to issue the Emancipation Proclamation before he wrote this letter. [Link] [Link] [Link]

Robert E. Lee never said this. Robert E. Lee was a strong proponent of slavery. This quote was manufactured many years later as part of an effort to rehabilitate Robert E. Lee's image as a "good confederate". [Link]

NNN. The agorist opinion is that Lincoln forcing the Union to remain was tyrannical. So his usage of the quote is not misleading towards that end. The further context of Lincoln's quote only shows the same thing the narrow quote does: Lincoln wanted to preserve the union.
