The US do not require its citizens to have an ID. ID ownership is particularly low amongst members of minorities. Other countries that require ID for voting, issue ID automatically to all adults. The US doesn't do that! [Link]

CN - The community Note is factually wrong. Most countries in Europe only provide a birth certificate when you’re born but no portable ID. You have to order and pay for one (e.g., passport or ‘Personalausweis’ in Germany) Stop biasing yourself with wrong information. [Link]

In the U.S. an ID is required to buy alcohol, cigarettes, to apply for passports, to drive cars, just to name a few. It’s not mandatory to carry one at all times, but it is a civic responsibility to get one.

The proposed CN is factually incorrect. Not all countries that require photo ID to vote (e.g. Sweden & Norway) issue any IDs automatically to its citizens. Citizens will have aquire such an ID through their own actions. [Link]
