Pongal (and allied festivals such as Sankranti) is a celebration of the Winter Solstice and involves the worship of the Sun. The roots are clearly Hindu (Pagan). In Christianity, Deuteronomy 17:2–5 forbids worship of the sun. In Islam, you only bow down Allah. [Link]
